Language for Learning: Infants and Toddlers- Uncaptioned

  1. Concept development- using descriptive language encouragement
  • Caregiver pointing at pictures of the child’s family and saying the names of the family members. Also asking the child “Where is grandma?”
  • Mom giving the child a toy and describing the toy.
  • Caregiver with the children describing the sky to them. The mom/caregiver saying, “The sky is so blue today”.

2. Describing events and actions

  • Caregiver playing with the children. The mom has a toy car and is rolling it back and forward. As the mom is doing that she saying, “Look you can roll after the car” and asking “Are you going backwards?”
  • While the child is washing her hands the caregiver is telling her and describing what she is doing.

3. Social and emotional development

  • Asking questions and pause giving the children the opportunity to think about the question and respond to the question.
  • Model present conversations
  • Quickly responding to crying or other attempts to communicate.

4. Responding to communication attempts

  • Father was with his other children and when the young one started to cry he asked her, “Are you hungry?” and he got up and fed her.
  • Child is laying down looking at stuffed animals and then starts to fuss. Caregiver asked him, “You rather do this sitting up?” and she picks him up. Then the caregiver said, “would that feel better? “

5. Positive language for guidance

  • Caregiver telling child to find a toy that the baby can hold and telling him thank you.
  • Child wanting to hug baby and the caregiver telling the child to be gentle.
  • Use positive statements

6. Using language during daily activities

  • During snack/lunch time the teacher describing the things that the children were doing.
  • Telling on of the child’s each time that she was moving. The teacher told the student were she was going to move to.
